We added a couple of judges this year. The judging team found the task of choosing the best gardens in the complex rewarding but very, very challenging. There were so many wonderful gardens, from large ones belonging to end units to attractive diminutive displays. The top three placed so close, we almost had a three-way tie. Even the margin between the honorable mentions and the top three was slim.

There are many beautiful gardens not mentioned below that arguably deserve an honorable mention. It was like splitting hairs for the judges, but we did the best we could to distinguish them based on many criteria. Evaluation took place during the first two weeks of June. Undoubtedly, we have some gardens in Gwynedd Pointe that would have placed differently later in the summer, depending on the bloom time of their predominant flowers. So as you stroll around the development, look at all the gardens, not just those on this list. Your efforts will be visually rewarding.

Thank you to the Rhoads Garden for supporting our contest for four years in a row!

1st Prize - $100 Rhoads Garden Gift Certificate
805 Evergreen Court
Honorable Mention last year. Everything is in the right spot. Two iron trellises with clematis planted last year making beautiful showing this year. Symmetry of non-plant material beautifully offset by imbalance of plant material.

2nd Prize - $50 Rhoads Garden Gift Certificate
6500 Rolling Hill
Color, color, everywhere! Third time in the Top 3!

3rd Prize - $25 Rhoads Garden Gift Certificate
5905 Constitution
View this one from the rear, from Rolling Hill. There is a lot of structure with the pergola, yet the plantings are lovely and elegant. Talk about a garden as an outdoor room!

Honorable Mention (in no particular order) - $10 Rhoads Garden Gift Certificates:

6105 Rolling Hill
Earned an honorable mention last year, was a judge’s favorite this year. If judging took place a little later in the season when the garden is in full bloom, could have been the winner.

6400 Rolling Hill
Nice color coordination of plant and non-plant material. Postage stamp-sized garden, yet really works, like a small still-life painting.

1505 Liberty Court
Best rock garden in Gwynedd Pointe. Bench is a nice place to sit and gaze.

1304 Kenwood
Nice orderly garden along a row of standout gardens.

500 Evergreen
The huge alliums were in bloom during the first week of judging, and really made the garden blossom.

3503 North Carriage
1st last year, 2nd the year before, and honorable mention the first contest year. Different look every year. Love the ornamental ball as focal point. Deserves emeritus status.

3404 South Carriage
Second place last year, and there will surely be those who believe it should be in the Top 3 again this year. Painterly execution of colors.

2204 Harvard
A 1st, 2nd and HM in the past. Deserves lifetime achievement award. (We might have to start a Hall of Fame!)

2905 Harvard
3rd prize last year, a real contender this year.

2501 Grist Mill
Third time HM, nice in front and around rear deck facing Bell Run.

Thanks again to the Rhoads Garden, and to all of our gardeners who make Gwynedd Pointe such an attractive place to live!

Judge's Comments:

It is time for me to finalize my thoughts and opinions on the various gardens throughout the Gwynedd Pointe Complex. Once again, another fine job of gardening in a tough situation with the limited growing space that is available. In a lot of ways, it is harder to garden in a smaller space than it is in a large garden bed: you have to be really selective in your plant choices. It is also tougher to really express yourself through your garden when there are so many limitations.

I have made five visits to Gwyenedd Pointe over a three week period in order to give a fair evaluation of the gardens as they evolved through the summer. As perennials go in and out of bloom and the annuals continue to grow, it is amazing how much the gardens change.

1st - 3503 Carriage
- 2nd place last year
- Couldn't get any more colorful - the hibiscus, marigolds, petunias, and impatiens, just wonderful!
- Last year, they had a large pear tree giving lots of shade - but they lost the tree in a storm and had to cut it down. I was anxious to see how they would respond to the new sunny growing environment. They passed with flying colors, even usning a water fountain to hide the old stump. - This year, they added hanging baskets to the pillars.
- Job well done!

2nd - 3404 Carriage
- Very colorful
- Geraniums and begonias at different levels throughout the garden
- The impatiens really stand out and pull you in
- The white impatiens really stand out and pull you in
- Hanging baskets and various plant stands add another dimension to the landscape
- The garden lights and bird bath complete the scene

3rd - 2905 Harvard
- I have been admiring this garden for years; it is always so colorful on the side of the house with all of the impatiens
- The red geraniums are loving the hot sun in the front yard
-The yellow pansies that were so pretty this spring are suffering from the hear of summer, but were an eye catcher earlier

HM - 6601 Colonial
- As mentioned above, this is always among my favorites.
- Lots of color, very vibrant - with all of the coleus and impatiens.

HM - 4403 Congress
- Great colors - waves of impatiens and vinca.
- Trellis for some height.
- A lot of stuff in a little space!

HM - 1301 Kenwood
- Just a nice, simple, clean, neat garden.
- The boxwoods with the statute in the front give a classic feel to the landscape.
- Coreopsis, hosta, and daylilies give texture as well as color to the garden.
- Variegated liriope.

HM - 2501 Gristmill
- Colorful back deck area visible from Bell Run.
- The mandevilla and colorful annuals and tropical plants give a resort fell to the deck - it's nice to be able to "vacation" at home!
- The front garden is simple but nicely done, accented by the dry-laid stone wall.

HM - 6105 Rolling Hill
- The wild garden look: not every garden has to be just colorful annuals, this garden has a little bit of everything in it! Cannas, clematis, coreopsis as well as hanging baskets by the front door.
- The purple and white petunias show well with the golden euonymus.

HM - 3005 Harvard
- Beautiful multi-level stone wall.
- Very colorful and inviting.
- The color of the showy petunias, verbenas, hydrangea, and pentas practically knocks you over, it is so strking!
- Bird feeder and flags, even the silk flowers on the porch add to the color!

HM - 905 Kenwood
- An old favorite of mine.
- Great perennials - a real natural look.
- Coreopsis and roses for early col0r, will have some nice color from the sedums this fall.

HM - 805 Evergreen
- A simple, but elegant garden with neatly trimmed shrubs, daylilies, catmint, and hostas for color, but the real standouts are the two iron trellises on the side of the house - they really make an impact against the tall, light-colored wall - the clematis planted at their base will make a nice show next year!

HM - 4601 Congress
- Petunias, zinnias, and box leaf euonymus add a lot of color and texture.
- Hanging baskets of non-stop begonias and petunias add some height.
- There is even a dog in the flowerbed (but don't worry, he looks friendly!)

HM - 2204 Harvard
- Another one of my old favorites.
- Bright white vinca in the front bed.
- The pots, trellis, and birdfeeders along the naturalized side and backyards are attractive add-ons.
- This well-tended garden is always changing.

Make sure to take the time to check out these and other gardens throughout the complex! I'm sure you'll find some that I've missed!

Keep up the good work and start planning for next year!

Committee Note: The Gwynedd Pointe Garden Contest Committee thanks Mike Kratz and his team at the Rhoads Garden for all of their hard work on ou contest! It is very much appreciated!!

In a lot of ways it is harder to garden in a smaller space than it is in a large garden bed: you have to be really selective in your plant choices. It is also tougher to really express yourself through your garden when there are so many limitations. The weather this year was a real challendge as well with the heat, humidity, drought in early spring, and floods in the summer.

I made five visits to Gwynedd Pointe over a three-week period in order to give a fair evaluation of the gardens as they evolved through the summer. As perennials go in and out of bloom and annuals continue to grow, it is amazing how much the gardens change.

1st- 2204 Harvard
- 2nd place last year
- A nice mix of perennials and annuals and garden accents
- Lots of color
- This garden is really alive! On most of my visits there was lots of activity with finches and cardinals at the bird feeders and butterflies flitting from flower to flower.
- Note: early on there was a beautiful red geranium in the large pot under the window. When that was finished blooming it was replaced with a new yellow plant. I like to see that kind of upkeep.

2nd - 3503 Carriage
- Honorable mention last year
- Very inviting - a cool retreat with all of the impatiens and coleus under the pear tree
- I love the pots going up the steps.
- The colors really pack a punch in a small area.

3rd - 6500 Rolling Hill
- 3rd place last year
- Just as nice as last year
- Very colorful. Love the bright bold colors of the marigolds, daylilies, and cosmos
- Nice daylilies around the side and the back

3rd - 6601 Colonial
- Honorable mention last year
- Color, color, color, love the impatiens
_New Guinea impatiens

HM - 6600 Colonial
- Very nice mix of plants and colors.
- Begonias, lobelias, and double impatiens.

HM - 6602 Colonial
- Lots of color.
- Very attractive.

Note: The three neighbors above (6600, 6601, and 6602) appear to work together: the gardens just flow into each other with so much color that it really makes quite a show.

HM - 2403 Grist Mill
- Used a lot of heat tolerant plants like dipladenia and blue daze on a sunny back deck.
- Colorful front yard with hanging baskets under the tree.

HM - 3005 Harvard
- Nice multi-level stone wall with a nice mix of colorful petunias, verbenas, and pentas.
- Hydgrangea and lanterns complete the landscape.

HM - 802 Evergreen
- Something a little different - sort of a wild English garden look with many perennials like liatris, daylilies, and salvia.

HM - 905 Kenwood
- 1st place winner last year.
- Still one of my favorites with perovskia, coreopsis, and roses for a great show.

HM - 4904 Congress
- Nice side and front yard with low maintenance plants like variegated liriope (an under-utilized plant) and daylilies as well as New Guinea impatiens for color.

HM - 4403 Congress
- Very colorful with impatiens and vinca.
- I like the trellis with the pot rings.

HM - 2501 Grist Mill
- Stone wall out front.
- Nice mix of perennials.
- Attractive from Bell Run.

6200 Rolling Hill
- An almost secluded garden but the purple petunias really pull you in.
- The sedums should be in full bloom in a couple of weeks.

There were some new additions as well as some perennial favorites in this year's selections. Make sure you take the time to check out the gardens throughout the complex, you may find some hidden gems.

Committee Note:

Thank you to our judge, Mike Kratz, Nursery Manager at The Rhoads Garden, for all of his hard work that made this year's contest a success! He truly knows his stuff, and he's a great guy as well!!

Thank you to the Rhoads Garden for providing the prizes!

Thank you to Frank DePace and Continental Property Management for providing the award ribbons!

Congratulations to the winners! Your gardens are beautiful and an asset to the community. And there are quite a few new gardens in Gwynedd Pointe that will surely be contenders next year.

Judge's Comments:

This was tougher than I thought it would be. Over a ten-day period I made four separate visits to the develpment for a total of seven hours. I tried to take into account the use of perennials, annuals, shrubs, potted plants and other embellishments such as rock walls, tresllis, lighting and statuary.

During the ten-day observation period it was interesting to see the gardens evolve as perennials came into and went out of bloom and the annuals grew by the day.

Gardening in limited spaces under tough condititions can be very challenging. Several very attractive gardens were not eligble for awards because they were planted by committee members. It was nice to see the effort put into many of the properties throughout the development.

1st - 905 Kenwood
- A nice cottage garden look - great use of perennials: perovskia roses, coreopsis and bird bath.
- Not real flashy and showy but very inviting.

2nd - 2204 Harvard
- Nice side yard, really shows while driving up Harvard - great geranium plant and perennials.
- Love the mix of plants, cobblestones and birdhouse.
- Really like the use of the pot with the frog by the parking area to extend the garden.

3rd - 1604 Liberty
- Very showy back garden around deck, easily seen from Bell Run.
- The daylilies and roses make quite a show and the look carries over to the front garden.

3rd - 6500 Rolling Hill
- Very colorful - nice mix of perennials (Shasta Daisies) with marigolds and other annuals.
- The clematis with the trellis add another dimiension to the garden.

HM - 2204 Harvard
- Nice stone wall and cutleaf maple.
- Colorful annuals.

HM - 3503 Carriage
- Beautiful impatiens.
- Love all the pots.
- Coleus looks great.

HM - 303 Signal Hill
- NIce backyard with perennials around it.
- Pots on the deck and urn planter look great!

HM - 701 Evergreen
- Hits you over the head with color!
- From the multitude of annuals to the colorforms on the window this one screams to be seen.

HM - 6601 Colonial
- Beautiful impatiens - lovely New Guinea impatiens hanging basket.

HM - 6600 Colonial
- Nice impatiens in side yard and impatiens in clay wall half-basket.

5501 Constitution
- Nice non-stop begonias, sundial and New Guinea impatiens.
