2012 WINNERS

Gwynedd Pointe Homeowners Association
8th Annual Garden Contest - 2012 Winners

Co-Sponsored by the Gwynedd Pointe Homeowners Association
&
The Rhoads Garden, 570 DeKalb Pike, North Wales

We say it every year – it gets harder and harder to judge the wonderful gardens in Gwynedd Pointe because there are so many great ones. Congratulations to the winners, and to all of those who did not win, yet contribute to making our neighborhood so beautiful. … And has it been hot enough for you!?

Grand Prize - $100 Gift Certificate for the Rhoads Garden

2402 Grist Mill – There must be pots of gold in the front and back gardens, because rainbows could originate in them, they’re that colorful. In the rear (visible from Bell Run), we saw foxglove, begonias, sedum, yellow lilies, daisies, and pinwheels for a little kinetic art. The front includes a nice Japanese maple and hydrangea. Either side standing alone would have won first prize. Great Job!!

Second Place - $75 Gift Certificate for the Rhoads Garden

3503 Carriage – This garden has been a perennial favorite (pun intended). Standing in front of it, your eyes are drawn to the fountain, which was running whenever we went by, up the slope past yellow, orange and pink hibiscuses, coleus, a sunburst trellis, lilies and impatiens, to the butterfly stained glass above the door. Beautiful!

Third Place - $50 Gift Certificate for the Rhoads Garden

6104 Rolling Hill – We liked the Phillies’ gnome, but it was the plantings, of course, that make this garden a winner. We saw primrose, catmint, calla lily, dianthus, and thunbergia (aka sunflower vine or black-eyed Susan vine), plus two nice hollies. Fantastic!

Honorable Mentions (in order by address) - $15 Gift Certificate for the Rhoads Garden

203 Signal Hill – A lot was done with little room in this garden. The judges liked the nasturtiums and the summer sweet. The boy and girl statues are nice touches.

502 Evergreen – Beautiful garden in a small space, with petunias, lilies, clematis, and orange begonias on a bench.

805 Evergreen – Another perennial favorite. The trellises with clematis, the color, it’s all there. This garden has a sculptural quality, and many of the plants were chosen to look great all summer.

1000 Kenwood – 1000 Kenwood is batting 1.000, with perfectly placed day lilies, hostas, rose, and astilbe.

1500 Liberty – The pink clematis spilling from the trellis was just beautiful. We liked the astilbe, and the potted geraniums and petunias. The birdbath provides a focal point. Good use of a small space.

2101 Harvard – A tombstone border surrounds this beautiful tiered garden, with its impatiens and potted geraniums. Look around, the pots are a little hidden and need to be discovered.

2302 Harvard – Beautiful hostas and a nice mauve hydrangea in this wonderful woodland garden.

2501 Grist Mill – A yearly favorite. Gorgeous red bud tree in the front, yellow hostas, Stella d’Oro lilies, a nice stone wall, and the bell-shaped wind chime is a nice touch.

6105 Rolling Hill – Always a beautiful garden! We saw Turk’s cap lily, pink lupine, snapdragons, salvia, mosses, and the bird bath is a good focal point.

6601 Colonial – A very colorful garden, with nicely spaced pansies, balloon flower, Stella d’Oro lilies, daisies, impatiens, S-shaped border, and river rock lining the sidewalk.

Judges’ Note – The following areas have many standout gardens not listed above: Carriage, Colonial, Constitution, Grist Mill, Kenwood, Liberty, Rolling Hill, and Signal Hill. In fact, there were contenders on every court and drive.

Special thanks to Frank DePace of Continental Property Management for his support, and to all the great gardeners that help to make Gwynedd Pointe so attractive!
