Garden Contest Committee
&
The Rhoads Garden, 570 DeKalb Pike, North Wales

We say it every year – it gets harder and harder to judge the wonderful gardens in Gwynedd Pointe. But it’s true! This year it was like one giant photo finish. Congratulations to the winners, and to all those who did not win yet contribute to making our development so beautiful.

Grand Prize - $100 Gift Certificate for the Rhoads Garden

6105 Rolling Hill – Variety, variety, variety, all beautifully placed! Coneflower, bee balm, petunias, snapdragon (a nice touch that you don’t see a lot), Turk’s cap lily, plumbago ground cover, astilbe and corydalis. Chrysanthemums for a line of texture until fall. Birdbath is a nice focal point.

Second Place - $50 Gift Certificate for the Rhoads Garden

6600 Colonial – You’ll want to set up a chair on the sidewalk and watch this garden; you might see a visitor to the hummingbird feeder. We saw clematis, stella d’ora lilies, potentilla, and an old favorite that is coming back, four o’clocks. The gourd birdhouse provides focus.

Third Place - $25 Gift Certificate for the Rhoads Garden

3404 Carriage – This garden is all about color. We saw calibrachoa, lobelia, yellow daisy, lantana, and two mandevilla. The Montauk daisy should look great in the fall.

Honorable Mentions (in order by address) - $10 Gift Certificate for the Rhoads Garden

1002 Kenwood – A shade garden that is beautiful in its understated elegance. Astilbe, hosta, holly, geranium, spider wort, and a nice purple leaf plum.

Judges’ Notes – there are some wonderful gardens on both sides of Kenwood.

2100 Harvard – A tidy, neat garden that proves you don’t need a lot of space for a nice display. The planter follows the design rule of thumb of “thriller-chiller-spiller” (Google it, it all makes sense).

2501 Grist – Gorgeous garden from the front, as well as in the rear from Bell Run. Hosta, angelonia, celosia, dahlias, and delphinium. Nice red bud tree (state tree of Oklahoma).

3401 Carriage – A nice display of dusty miller, hostas, pansies, and three beautiful hanging baskets.

3503 Carriage – Beautiful garden. Sweet potato vines in hanging baskets, a block of coleus, stella d’ora lily, impatiens, begonias, dahlias, orange hibiscus, and ornamental oregano.

4101 Quaker – Hollyhocks, balloon flower, and an assortment of colorful flowers that must make the butterflies happy.

Judges’ Note – There are quite a few impressive gardens on Quaker this year.

5701 Constitution – Beautiful hydrangea in pink and blue. Orange lilies and a pot of impatiens mean color, color, color!

6501 Rolling Hill – Can you say perfectly placed plants? White daisies play off the white rocker. Lamium ground cover, and a nice red maple.

Judges’ Note- There are some beautiful gardens on both sides of the street on Rolling Hill.

6602 Colonial – Foxglove, verbena, potted petunia, beautiful.

6901 Colonial – holly, hydrangea, basil, dianthus, impatiens, coreopsis and sedum. A wonderful garden.

Judges’ Note – Colonial is full of beautiful gardens. Be sure to check them out.

Special thanks to Frank DePace of Continental Property Management for his support, and to all the great gardeners that help to make Gwynedd Pointe so attractive!
